What does consuming coconut oil have to do with overall good health, physical degeneration and dental health? Coconut oil? Really?! That question was my initial reaction to seeing several books about coconut oil, “oil pulling”, and the health benefits of consuming coconut oil on the shelves in some holistic dental offices recently.
Readers may recall my mentioning some of the many natural health and holistic nutrition books I’ve been reading over the last few months, discovered during the time I spent as a dental professional observing and watching the methods and dental protocols used in a variety of local holistic, fluoride free and mercury free dental offices. In one holistic dental office in particular, the book shelves in the doctor’s private office was filled with books on natural health and nutrition, books about coconut oil and its many health benefits, and the dental office reception/waiting room had many of those same books on display.
Having spent an enormous amount of time researching and reading books about the toxicity of fluoride in dental products, in drinking water and a variety of foods and beverages, I became absolutely convinced that fluoride is a poison and must be avoided as much as humanly possible. Every book that I’ve read thus far, including the books about coconut oil, have discussed how dangerous and toxic fluoride is, and they’ve also discussed the toxic dangers of mercury “silver” amalgam fillings and root canals. Not only that, but the books about coconut oil also discussed the importance of detoxifying the body from heavy metals including mercury, and for overall good health.
Nutrition and Physical Degeneration
Once I completed my research into fluoride, I was extremely anxious to read the book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A. Price DDS. Weston Price was one of the most prominent and highly respected dentists and health researchers of the 20th century. Dr. Price spent almost ten years traveling the world in 14 different countries, in some of the most remote areas, investigating the reasons why and how the extremely healthy people he came across maintained such high levels of good health, perfectly shaped dental arches and perfectly aligned teeth, had minimal to no tooth decay whatsoever, and high immunity to degenerative diseases.
As surprising as it was to me, every natural health book and every book about coconut oil, and every other book I’ve read so far, discovered on the shelves in the holistic dentist’s office, refers to and recommends reading Dr. Weston A. Price’s book. Why? Because Dr. Price is telling the truth about the causes of tooth decay, deformed jaw structures and crooked teeth, the causes of the many degenerative diseases in our modern industrialized world, with pictures to prove it. All disease starts in the mouth and the teeth tell the tale of your overall health.
The population groups Dr. Price found to be of superb health inside and out lived entirely on local foods common in those areas. REAL food. Paraphrasing from the book and cookbook Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon, referencing Dr. Weston Price’s research into the cause-effect relationship between our modern “Western” industrialized foods: diets of the groups of people differed in many respects but they also had several things in common.
Almost without exception, the groups Dr. Price studied ate liberally of seafood or other animal proteins and fats in the form of organ meats and dairy products; these groups placed high value on animal fats as absolute necessity to good health; they ate fats, meats, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds, as well as whole grains in their whole, unrefined state. All “primitive” diets contained some raw foods, of both animal and vegetable origin.
These “primitive” tribes and villages of people maintained excellent health generation after generation, producing healthy children with ease, free of chronic disease, dental decay and mental illness. They were strong, sturdy, vibrant and attractive. They did not suffer the many diseases and chronic health problems common today. No heart disease, asthma, arthritis, heart attacks or strokes, diabetes, leukemia, measles, cancers, chronic fatigue, allergies, colitis, Crohn’s Disease, dental cavities, migraines and a whole host of other illnesses.
Comparing these healthy peoples, of the same genetic background and living in the same geographic area, with those who had become “civilized” by eating and consuming foods from the “industrialized revolution”, such as sugar, refined grains, canned foods and pasteurized milk, Dr. Price found infertility, degenerative illness, infectious disease and rampant tooth decay. The pictures Dr. Price included in his book are incredible to see. The images show how children born to traditional people who had adopted the modern, “Western”, industrialized diet had narrowed faces, crowded and crooked teeth, bone structure deformities and tremendous susceptibility to every kind of medical problem you can imagine. Numerous studies have confirmed Dr. Price’s research that our so-called civilized diet, the Western diet of devitalized fats, oils and refined carbohydrates, is in fact the reason why “modern” society is so plagued with enormous health problems.
As I’ve read through these many books, notable quotes kept coming to mind. “You are what you eat”, and Hippocrates “Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food”. You’ve probably heard the saying “the eyes are a window to the soul”. “Iridology” is the practice of examining the iris of the eye for markings and discolorations in order to determine possible health problems in various areas of the body, including the heart, lungs, spleen, spine and kidneys. If the eyes are a window to the soul, then the mouth is a window to your overall health. You and I can be nutritionally deficient and even be suffering from malnutrition and not even realize it because we haven’t connected the dots.
The book Oil Pulling Therapy by Dr. Bruce Fife explains the theory of disease called “Focal Infection” and how it relates to our dental health and overall health. Dr. Fife says:
“A wise farmer always examines an animal’s mouth before buying it. He knows that the condition of the animal’s mouth reflects the health of the entire body. No farmer in his right mind is going to pay top dollar for an animal with missing teeth or swollen gums. Dental problems signal that other health problems are likely present. This is true with humans as well. This fact was recognized centuries ago and was the basis for the focal infection theory used in dentistry. This theory basically states that an oral infection can influence the health of the entire body. Based on this theory, old-time dentists were inclined to pull all diseased teeth in hopes of preventing disease from spreading to other parts of the body. Before the twentieth century, the focal theory of infection was considered to be so obvious it was accepted as fact. Those who worked with animals knew very well that dental health affected overall health. In humans, when infected teeth were pulled, patients often reported recovery from various other health problems.”
Although the focal infection theory was ignored by both dentists and physicians for decades, the connection between dental health and systemic disease kept creeping back in, and research studies began appearing in medical and dental journals making the clear and obvious connection between various acute and chronic illnesses with oral health. So much so that focal infection is no longer considered a theory, but true fact and well documented. Dental patients who have a heart problem or an artificial joint are considered to be so vulnerable to this type of infection that they must first be treated with antibiotics prior to undergoing any dental procedure.
Picture in your mind the inside of your favorite grocery store, visualize all the different areas and aisles within the store you prefer to buy food from.
How much of what the store contains and sells would be considered REAL food?
How much of the store is comprised of processed foods; canned goods; foods loaded with preservatives, flavor enhances, artificial dyes and other chemicals; sugary foods; “fast foods”; refined grain foods like chips, cookies and crackers of all sorts; unhealthy hydrogenated vegetable oils; white flour and foods containing white flour; foods loaded with antibiotics and hormones, etc?
During Dr. Price’s research into the groups of people consuming their traditional diet of local foods, versus those who began incorporating modern Western foods into their diet, it didn’t take much change in their eating habits to make a drastic and negative affect on their health. The most common imported “Western” foods were white flour, sugar, polished rice, vegetable oils, and canned foods. All it took for the healthy people to become very unhealthy, nutritionally deficient, was by displacing the more nutritious foods with a few commercially imported products.
Among those eating the modern imported foods, 90-100 percent of them suffered from dental cavities and loss of teeth, while those who ate their traditional foods had much better dental health and overall health even though they did not brush their teeth, use tooth whiteners, fluoride toothpastes, disinfectant mouthwashes, nor did they have access to any professional dental care via a dentist or hygienist.
Their good dental health and excellent health overall was a direct result of eating honest-to-goodness healthy foods. Real food. They ate whole foods, not processed foods. They ate coconut oil, raw milk, real butter and animal fat. Saturated fats?! Gasp! “But the health experts tell us we should avoid saturated fats like butter and use margarine and vegetable oils instead.” Yeah, I know. Many if not most of these same “experts” are also trying to convince us that genetically modified foods (GMO’s) are perfectly fine and healthy too.
Everything you put into your mouth and everything you consume, be it foods or beverages or dental products (fluoridated toothpaste, mouthwash, etc), determines your dental health and your overall health. The shape and condition of your jaw (palate), teeth, gums, tongue, oral tissues etc shows how healthy or unhealthy your whole body is from the inside out, and whether or not you are nutritionally deficient even if/when you “eat healthy” and/or take vitamin/mineral supplements. NOW I know why I suffered for many years biting my nails but no longer do – I was nutritionally deficient in every way imaginable and didn’t even know it! And I now understand other things about REAL Nutrition and Physical Degeneration that have affected me personally since I was a child, but assumed wrongly that it was simply genetics. WRONG!
Coconut Oil Health Benefits
The 5 coconut oil books that I’ve read so far list the many (MANY) health benefits to using and consuming coconut oil. Health benefits to your skin, hair, nails, teeth, gums and hundreds if not thousands of overall health benefits provided by coconut oil. A summary of just some of the researched and documented truth’s about coconut oil (GASP!, it’s a Saturated Fat!) that medical research and published studies are confirming.
When I first began reading the books about coconut oil and its purported benefits, I honestly thought “You have GOT to be kidding me! This has GOT to be a ruse, a hoax. This can’t possibly be true.” Modern medical science now confirms the use of coconut in treating many conditions. Published studies in medical journals show that coconut, coconut oil, coconut water, coconut milk etc may really provide a wide range of health benefits. Some of these are:
- Kills viruses that cause influenza, herpes, measles, hepatitis C, SARS, AIDS, and other illnesses.
- Kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, gum disease and cavities, pneumonia, and gonorrhea, and other diseases.
- Kills fungi and yeasts that cause candidiasis, ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush, diaper rash, and other infections.
- Expels or kills tapeworms, lice, giardia, and other parasites.
- Provides a nutritional source of quick energy.
- Boosts energy and endurance, enhancing physical and athletic performance.
- Improves digestion and absorption of other nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.
- Improves insulin secretion and utilization of blood glucose.
- Relieves stress on pancreas and enzyme systems of the body.
- Reduces symptoms associated with pancreatitis.
- Helps relieve symptoms and reduce health risks associated with diabetes.
- Reduces problems associated with malabsorption syndrome and cystic fibrosis.
- Improves calcium and magnesium absorption and supports the development of strong bones and teeth.
- Helps protect against osteoporosis.
Read more of the many benefits of coconut oil and uses. Using coconut oil as a hair conditioner works great! Spread coconut oil throughout your hair and scalp, leave it in for an hour or so (or overnight covered with a shower cap or plastic bag), wash it out and if you like, use a little of your regular hair conditioner to finish up.
Coconut oil also works great as a natural body lotion (without all the chemicals from store-bought lotions), and as a homemade natural antiperspirant and deodorant. Again, No Chemicals being absorbed through your skin!
