Giving kids Spanish toys and games to help them in learning Spanish as a second language has been high on my list of Christmas gift ideas and birthday gifts for quite some time now. Learning a second language, including Spanish, from the time kids are barely able to talk, is a great idea for bilingual parents and families.
Providing babies and toddlers and older kids a variety of ways of learning to speak Spanish fluently helps kids become fluent in Spanish or any other language at a much younger age, rather than waiting until language classes are offered in schools. The younger parents begin teaching kids Spanish, the quicker children will begin understanding and speaking words in Spanish. And as a grandparent of (hopefully) soon-to-be fluent Spanish speaking grandchildren, brushing up on my Spanish will help a lot in advancing the grandkids Spanish communication skills as well as widening my own Spanish vocabulary. It’s a Win-Win on all sides.
Reading bilingual books to young children and toddlers is certainly one great way for learning Spanish words, phrases, identifying picture items using Spanish words, and is something we’ve advocated and done often. English/Spanish books for kids and babies holds a prominent place in our home, and it’s a fun and educational reading time for us to share and enjoy when the grandchildren are over.
I search for educational Spanish toys and games very often, as gift ideas for upcoming birthdays or holiday gifts, but also for us to have interactive and educational things for little boys and girls to play with in our home, while also learning the Spanish language.
Not all Spanish toys are created equal. Some are not bilingual, foreign language learning toys at all, but are only in Spanish. Besides Spanish toys for babies and toddlers or older kids, it’s great to have a variety of English to Spanish music CD’s and movies on hand. Playing a kid’s Spanish CD while traveling in the car, or having it play at home while the kids are playing with their toys, helps in exposing young children to the Spanish language from an early age.
It has not been hard at all for me to find Spanish toys, games, interactive electronic and educational products that are fun for babies and children to play with and learn. All I need to do is do a search for “Spanish Kids” on Amazon and I’m given a huge selection of possibilities to choose from. I created a private “wish list” of sorts on Amazon that I titled “Kids Gift Ideas” that only I can see, where I keep my list of all gift ideas for the grandchildren until I’m ready to actually buy the toys, games, books, etc.
Here are a few of my favorite Spanish kids toys and games that I’ve added to my “Kids Gift Ideas” list for the little girls and boys in the family.
Baby Alive Baby All Gone Hispanic doll by Hasbro, for kids ages 3 and up. The Baby Alive Baby All Gone doll speaks in Spanish and English. Just press down on the doll’s bracelet for a few seconds to activate the bilingual feature and hear all the doll’s phrases in Spanish. Kids can pretend to feed their baby doll at snack time with the Baby Alive Baby All Gone doll. Put the pretend yogurt in the spoon and “feed” it to the doll. Once the spoon goes into the doll’s mouth, the yogurt “magically” disappears. If the doll is still hungry, it will ask for more by saying different phrases, such as “Strawberries are yummy!” and “Where did it go?” When it is time for a drink, the doll can be fed from its bottle, and the pretend milk “magically” disappears.
