When I began researching the controversy surrounding water fluoridation several months ago, and learned where fluoride comes from, I was not at all prepared to discover the real truth about fluoride. To say that I was shocked to learn what fluoride really is and how artificial, man-made (not naturally occurring) fluoride in drinking water, baby foods, infant formulas, baby nursery bottled water, juices, mouthwashes and processed foods is actually a toxic substance, is an enormous understatement.
A more accurate description of my reaction to learning about fluoride’s toxicity, its structure and well-documented harmful effects on the human body over time, is that everything I’ve been taught about fluoride and its claimed benefits as a dental professional, have been turned upside down and inside out.
Learning about the history of fluoride, its use in supposedly preventing tooth decay, and the details of how artificial fluoride was and continues to be dumped into the municipal water supplies in the U.S. and other countries, leads me to question and doubt the efficacy and safety of other so-called safe dental treatment products.
“Fluoride is naturally occurring” and safe, or so we’ve been lead to believe. Arsenic and lead are also naturally occurring, but would you knowingly and willingly drink a glass or two of those toxic substances or give it to your children? Of course not. Did you know that the Fraud and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies fluoride as an “unapproved drug”? The fluoride in your drinking water, tap water from your sink, is not the “naturally occurring” fluoride you might think it is. Far from it.
Dr. Paul Connett, Professor of Chemistry at St. Lawrence University in New York, and co-authors James Beck MD, PHD and H. Spedding Micklem DPhil, wrote the book entitled “The Case Against Fluoride“, published on October 7, 2010. I highly recommend and strongly encourage everyone to read this book, and carefully review the many references and citations included for fact checking. Dr. Connett’s book is a comprehensive, fully documented, highly regarded and easy-to-read investigation into the science behind water fluoridation, the links between fluoride and harm to various parts of the body, and that the “evidence” of fluoridation reducing tooth decay and building strong teeth is surprisingly weak.
Quoting directly from my copy of the book, the authors explain the truth of where fluoride comes from and how man-made, artificial fluoride compounds began being added to municipal water supplies: “It can come as a shock to find that the chemicals used to fluoridate the water are not pharmaceutical grade, like those used in fluoridated toothpaste and other dental products, but are mainly hazardous waste products of the phosphate fertilizer industry. An even greater shock is to find that while many agencies promote the practice of water fluoridation in the United States, no federal agency accepts responsibility for it”. [emphasis mine]
Chapter 3 of the book explains that the bulk of the chemicals used to fluoridate come from the wet-scrubbing systems of the phosphate fertilizer industry, saying:
“Wet scrubbers were introduced into the phosphate manufacturing process to remove two highly toxic gases: hydrogen fluoride (HF) and silicon tetrafluoride (SiF4). For many years these gases had damaged vegetation in the vicinity of phosphate plants, as well as crippling cattle on local farms. Fortunately, a spray of water is able to capture the gases and convert them to a solution of hexafluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6). When this resulting solution has reached a concentration of about 23 percent, it is shipped untreated in large tanker trucks to chemical companies that then send it around the country to be used as a fluoridating agent in over 90 percent of the water supplies fluoridated in the United States. Sodium fluoride is used as a fluoridating agent in less than 10 percent of the water fluoridated.”
Fluoride was a known toxin well before the water fluoridation trials began in 1945. Then in 1950, before any trials had been completed, and before any comprehensive health studies had been finalized and published, the asinine practice of water fluoridation was endorsed by the Public Health Service (PHS, now known as the DHHS). Without any solid and verifiable scientific information to judge the safety and effectiveness of water fluoridation, endorsements flooded in from the ADA, AMA, the American Public Health Association (APHA) and other organizations. You see, there can’t be an epidemic of good health – doctors and dentists might be put out of business.
As far back as 1936, the Journal of the American Dental Association said that fluoride at 1ppm (part per million) concentration is as toxic as arsenic and lead. In the September 18, 1943 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association about fluoride said, “fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons that change the permeability of the cell membrane by certain enzymes”. (See Dr. Mercola’s comments about fluoridation)
On October 1, 1944, the Journal of the American Dental Association published an editorial stating, “Drinking water containing as little as 1.2 ppm fluoride will cause developmental disturbances. We cannot run the risk of producing such serious systemic disturbances. The potentialities for harm outweigh those for good.”
In fact, my research leads me to question and doubt much of what is said by the CDC, EPA, FDA, AMA, ADA and other high-powered health organizations, whose responsibility it is to tell us what is or isn’t safe and beneficial for us. There are enormous amounts of scientific research studies and toxicology reports, dating back to the very beginning of when the water fluoride debacle was initiated, and modern day research studies, that would lead a rational person to recognize the dangers of fluoride in drinking water and other products with fluoride added to them.
Factual truths about the dangerous effects of fluoride intake on the short and long-term health and wellbeing of infant babies, children and teenagers, adults and the elderly, are discussed in documentary films, news articles, scientific magazines and books, in great detail. Videotaped interviews with expert scientists, toxicologists and chemists, discussing the harmful effects of fluoride and doing everything they can to ring the warning alarm bells to consumers about fluoride’s toxicity on the brain, kidneys, heart, liver, thyroid, teeth, gastrointestinal system, nerves, bones etc are all must-see, must-read information for consumers.
In an interview with Dr. Mercola, Dr. Connett had this to say about fluoride in drinking water, compared to the amount of fluoride recommended for brushing teeth:
“The sad irony here is that the FDA, which does not regulate fluoride in drinking water, does regulate toothpaste,” Connett says, “and on the back of a tube of fluoridated toothpaste… it must state that “if your child swallows more than the recommended amount, contact a poison control center.”
The amount that they’re talking about, the recommended amount, which is a pea-sized amount, is equivalent to one glass of water.
The FDA is not putting a label on the tap saying don’t drink more than one glass of water. If you do, contact a poison center. So you got this tweedledum and tweedledee…
There is no question that fluoride — not an excessive amount — can cause serious harm. There have been examples of children who swallowed the gel that is used for topical treatment and they died as a consequence. So fluoride is extremely toxic.”
The more information I read or watch about fluoride and the claims that fluoride helps protect teeth against tooth decay, the more disillusioned and angrier I become. Fluoride is a cumulative poison. If you were to carefully review all the different sources of fluoride you and your children and family are being exposed to on a regular basis, you too would be shocked to discover how much toxic fluoride you’re actually ingesting. Fluoride poisoning can lead to internal bleeding, long-term bone damage and tooth loss, amongst other health problems. Fluoride weakens teeth and “overexposure” to fluoride causes dental fluorosis in teeth.
The harmful effects of fluoride on the body may or may not become evident in the short term, but over a period of time (perhaps many years) the accumulation of fluoride buildup in the body becomes apparent in the various illnesses/diseases mentioned in previous paragraphs. If fluoride’s toxicity and cumulative effects on the body isn’t enough to grab your attention, maybe recent news reports about the asinine idea of adding Lithium, a psychiatric drug prescribed for depression, mania and bipolar disorder, to drinking water will get your attention.
